The problem arises when we deploy AI as though it were automation: expecting certainty, simplicity, or plug-and-play solutions. This sets up unrealistic expectations — and obscures the real value (and limits) of both.

It also risks erasing important conversations around accountability. When something goes wrong, was it the AI’s call, or an automated process that lacked fail-safes? Was anyone watching?
Treating AI like a magic button — instead of a tool that requires judgment — creates ethical and operational blind spots.
Rethinking What We Automate
Not everything that can be automated should be. And not everything that AI can predict should be acted on automatically.
Tasks involving empathy, ethics, or ambiguity should almost always involve a human. At the very least, systems should be designed with review, correction, and escalation pathways. AI can assist, but it shouldn’t adjudicate.
